I’ve been struggling with this issue of whether to call myself a vegetarian or vegan.
I don’t eat any animal products. No eggs, dairy, etc. But I know being vegan is more than just restricting your diet.
I have a pet bird named Tango, who I love soooooo much. I let him out of his cage almost every day to play with him. He has baths, and toys and a purple fluffy tent to sleep in. I bought 2 or 3 years ago before I became vegetarian. I know its wrong to put birds in cages, but I couldn’t bear to part with him.
Do you think I can rightfully call myself a vegan while still having a pet?
I think it’s ethical to keep pets if they’re happy and healthy while living with us. Your bird sounds so happy with you, and you said he gets out to stretch his wings and play. I don’t see anything cruel about keeping him, or any other animal who can live a healthy, happy life with us.
I have a horse (who was very excited when I came to ride her today), two cats (who would have starved to death if I hadn’t rescued them), and a bird (who lives a life similar to your bird, except she has a yellow fluffy tent 
). They’re happy, they’re healthy, and I consider them my family rather than my property. I don’t see anything wrong with keeping animals under those conditions.
