My new parakeet won’t do anything!!?

I just got a yellow male parakeet today for my birthday, and it won’t do anything. It won’t drink the water or play with its toys or sing. It just sits on the perch and looks miserable.
I got a book on parakeets and I fixed up the cage the way the book said to. And he’s not under a draft. I don’t know what’s wrong. Is he lonely? How can I make him a happy bird?

He is just getting new to his surroundings. And he was probably with other birds at the pet store, so he might be a little lonely.
I would put him in a quiet, semi-dark place and leave him be for a while until he adjusts to his new surroundings.
When he starts to perk up a bit, just sit by the cage and talk to him in a quiet voice. This will get him used to you. Don’t rush things, it is very tempting to try to start finger training them and playing with them immediatly.
When he’s used to you, try putting your hand in his cage for him to get used to it. When he’s used to it and its movements then try finger training.
Birds are awesome. If you invest time and lots of love in them, you get great rewards.

Large Red Handmade Glass Happy Drinking Bird This little guy (or gal) is gorgeous. Handmade detail is exquisite. The bird is about 7″ long from top of head to bottom of bulb.
